It s getting kids excited about drinking all their vitamins and minerals Ag Reporter Sarah Gustin explains how one new program is promoting physical activity and the dairy industry one milk carton at a time Char Herr Midwest Dairy Assn 50 percent of the daily calories of students is consumed in schools So the school enviornment is an ideal setting to teach students about healthy eating and physical activity so they become life long habits The National Dairy Council and the NFL are launching Fuel Up to Play 60 Char Herr Midwest Dairy Assn The fuel up to play 60 program is going to be great for the dairy industry and to encourage kids to get more of the nutrient rich foods whcih of course include dairy They need to have those 3 servings of dairy a day and this program will help encourage that component of their diet The program aims toward tackling childhood obesity and to get kids to put a carton of milk on their tray Getting more milk cartons on school lunch trays is a boost for the industry Fuel up gets kids drinking milk and eating more lowfat dairy products Along with more fruits vegetables and whole grains Play 60 get s kids moving for at least an hour a day Michael Porter PE Teacher Obesity rates are rising and because of that they are also seeing diabetes rates going up with that This geneation has been called the generation that is going to die before their parents actually do so that riases a red flaag as a physical education teacher or health individual Students also have the chance to win prizes for themselves and their school by logging on to the fuel up to play 60 website and tracking their activity and healthy eating The school with the most points will earn a makeover The student with the most points could be featured in an upcoming Fuel Up to Play 60 promotion Over 260 schools in the state have the materials for the fuel up to play 60 program This week a professional football player actually visited a west fargo school to get kids students excited about eating more dairy and to encourage them to get moving
